Vintage Rolex watches with glossy dials and “gilt” printing from the 1950s and 1960s are highly prized by collectors. In fact, it was quite difficult to get Paul to put this one in the auction as the gilt dial appears to be perfect, without any cracks, crazing or spots in the lacquer from what we can see. Glossy dials from that period often have little issues due to the sensitive nature of the lacquer, so seeing one in this condition is extremely rare and special.
The glossy dial with “gilt” text appears to be original, with no visible imperfections in the gloss, which is very rare to see on a vintage Rolex with a glossy dial. The tritium lume on the dial has aged to a warm cream-yellow color. The hour, minute, seconds, and 24-hour hands all appear to be original, with a warm cream-yellow color that matches the dial. The 24-hour hand has the correct small triangle tip for the period.
The case appears to be lightly polished, but is overall quite full.
The bezel insert appears to be original, with some scratches and fading of the red side to pink, with an overall pleasing color scheme.
The steel rivet bracelet was US-made and produced by C+I, with a 7-72 code, corresponding to production in July 1972. The bracelet is slightly newer than the watch, and appears to be unpolished, with some stretch.
The Twinlock crown appears to be original. The crystal appears to be original, with some faint scratches. The watch is running and keeping time, and a one-year service warranty is included. The bracelet has 12 links, and will approximately fit an 7.25 inch wrist.
