Catalog Essay:
The reference 1675 Rolex GMT-Master was first released in 1959 as the follow-up to the inaugural GMT-Master reference that debuted in the mid 1950s. With the introduction of the ref. 1675, the case of the GMT-Master grew to 40mm and crown-guards were added to the case to offer better protection for the winding crown. Many collectors consider the reference 1675 to be the model that first established the design codes that would go on to define the watch for the next several generations.
Due to a production span that lasted until 1980, surviving examples of ref. 1675 GMT-Master watches can be found with a wide range of variation in regards to their dials, bezels, hands, bracelets, and crown-guards shapes. Certain traits can be both exceptionally rare and valuable, and it is this diversity that exists among GMT-Master 1675 watches that makes it such an exciting reference for individuals to collect and acquire.
The very earliest examples of the Rolex GMT-Master 1675 feature cases with pointed crown guards, which were phased out in the mid 1950s. This unique feature helps to immediately distinguish early ref. 1675 watches from later-era examples of the reference. Additionally while the red and blue ‘Pepsi’ bezel was a standard option on the GMT-Master 1675, the Pepsi insert on this particular example has faded over the years to a striking sky blue and fuschia color.
Fitted with a small GMT hand like other early production examples of the reference 1675, the most noteworthy feature about this particular example is its glossy gilt chapter ring dial that has turned a bright and striking ‘tropical’ brown color over the years. With an estimated production date of 1961, this watch is nearly a half century old, and its breathtaking tropical dial makes it truly unique among other examples of this iconic Rolex GMT-Master reference.
MOVEMENT: Movement is functioning. Watch comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
