Celebrated by many collectors as the quintessential vintage Rolex GMT-Master, the reference 1675 was the first model to introduce a number of design codes and features that would define Rolex’s GMT collection for the next several decades. With a production period that spans approximately 1959 to 1980, reference 1675 GMT-Master watches can be found with a wide range of variation in regards to their dials, hands, bezels, bracelets, and crown guards.
This particular Rolex GMT-Master 1675 has an estimated production date of 1961 and it offers all of the design features that are characteristic of early-production reference 1675 watches. Unlike later-era examples of the reference that have squared-off crown guards, this watch features the rare and coveted ‘pointed crown guards’ case - a feature that was phased out entirely by the mid-1960s. Additionally, the bezel on this watch features an original ‘fat-font’ Pepsi insert that has faded to a light blue and red, reflecting the age and history of this vintage Rolex pilot’s watch.
Much like the case and bezel, everything about the dial and hands on this particular example is representative of early reference 1675 Rolex GMT-Master watches. The glossy gilt dial features both chapter ring and exclamation markings, making it an exceptionally rare variation of the already highly-coveted gilt dials found on early Rolex sports watches. Additionally, like other ref. 1675 GMT-Master watches produced before the late 1960s, this example features a small 24-hour hand - a trait was discontinued less than half way through production of the reference 1675 and has not made an appearance on a Rolex GMT watch ever since.
The reference 1675 was the model from the Rolex GMT-Master’s history that first granted the collection its own unique defining elements. While surviving ref. 1675 watches can be found with a wide range of variation, the later-era versions significantly outnumber their early-production counterparts, and this particular example boasts all of the traits that are characteristic of Rolex’s original vision for this historic and celebrated GMT reference.
