The Rolex GMT-Master collection was first launched in 1955 to meet the request of Pan Am Airlines pilots, who required a timepiece that they could use to simultaneously track multiple time zones while working on long-haul transcontinental flights. Featuring an additional centrally-mounted 24-hour hand and and a red and blue bidirectional bezel, the Rolex GMT-Master enabled pilots and crew members to quickly access a secondary timezone by simply rotating the bezel and referencing the 24-hour hand.
By the end of the 1950s, the concept of the GMT-Master had been proven, and Rolex released a follow-up model that took the idea of the original reference and reimagined it as its own purpose-built design. The Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675 launched in 1959, and while the inaugural GMT-Master was largely based on the existing Rolex Turn-O-Graph, the reference 1675 was a watch entirely of its own, purpose built design.
The Rolex GMT-Master 1675 would remain in production until 1980 and during that time, it was manufactured with a variety of different dials, hands, bezels, cases, and bracelets. The ref. 1675 marked the introduction of crown guards to the GMT-Master line, and the very earliest examples received cases with pointed crown guards (known as PCG cases). Additionally, early-production ref. 1675 watches were fitted with glossy gilt dials and small 24-hour hands, which separates them from examples produced near the end of the 1960s, which were fitted matte dials and standard 24-hour hands.
This particular reference 1675 Rolex GMT-Master dates to approximately 1963, and as one would expect, it features a PCG case and is fitted with a gilt ‘Swiss-Only’ dial, a small 24-hour hand, and an original fat-font ‘Pepsi’ bezel insert. The luminous material on the dial and hands has developed a rich and creamy patina, while the watch is fitted with a vintage rivet-link Oyster bracelet, making it an excellent example of an early Rolex GMT-Master 1675 wristwatch.
MOVEMENT: Movement is functioning. This vintage Rolex GMT Master comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
