Rolex released the reference 6536 Submariner in 1956 as the follow-up to the first series of Submariner dive watches that appeared the year that the collection made its debut. Visually similar to its immediate predecessors, the Submariner 6536 features a 37mm case without crown-guards, and it is fitted with a 6mm winding crown, classifying it the small-crown version of the Submariner model 6538 famously worn by James Bond in the original films from the 1960s. The smaller case diameter and lack of crown-guards are hallmark traits of the very earliest Rolex Submariner watches, and immediately set the ref. 6536 apart from more contemporary Submariner references.
Like all early vintage Rolex Submariner models, the ref. 6536 pre-dates the arrival of a date complication on the Submariner collection, making it a time-only watch with a bidirectional, friction-fitted bezel. Additionally, much like other early vintage Submariner watches, the reference 6536 is fitted with a glossy gilt dial and a domed acrylic crystal. However, unlike many subsequent iterations of the Submariner that feature white gold hands, the ref. 6536 is fitted with a gilt handset with a seconds hand that is finished bright white.
Production of the reference 6536 Submariner ended by 1959, and due to its relatively short production period, significantly fewer ref. 6536 watches were made compared to more contemporary Submariner generations. Additionally, most Rolex Submariner 6536 watches were purchased with the intent of being used as professional underwater timing tools and saw rigorous use. Consequently, many were lost, damaged, or destroyed over the years, and a relatively small number of examples have managed to survive to this day.
Subsequent Rolex Submariner generations that have 40mm cases and crown-guards have an appearance that is far closer to the modern Submariner watches that Rolex sells today. However, these early pre-crown-guard references have a distinctly vintage aesthetic that separates them from all other Rolex Submariner models, while still offering all of the hallmark traits of Rolex’s iconic dive watch collection.
MOVEMENT: Movement is functioning. This vintage Submariner comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
