The reference 5513 Rolex Submariner was first released in 1962, and remained in production until 1989, making it the Submariner reference with the longest production period in the history of Rolex’s iconic dive watch. Due to having a production span of over a quarter of a century, Rolex Submariner 5513 watches can be found with a wide range of variation when it comes to dials, bezels, crown guards, crystals, and bracelets. This diversity within a single reference makes the ref. 5513 Submariner one of the most interesting and exciting Rolex references to collect.
During its production period, the ref. 5513 Submariner was fitted with three different generations of dials. The very first reference 5513 watches were fitted with glossy gilt dials; however by around 1967, Rolex stopped using gild dials, and switched to matte dials, which lasted until the mid-1980s. By approximately 1984, Rolex had discontinued matte dials on the Submariner collection, and switched to gloss black dials with applied, white gold hour markers, which is similar to the style of dials fitted to modern Rolex Submariner watches.
Despite not being the oldest or most unusual Submariner reference ever produced, many collectors feel that the reference 5513 is the quintessential vintage Rolex Submariner reference, and it is likely the first model that comes to many individual’s minds when they think of a vintage Rolex dive watch. Additionally, since production of the ref. 5513 spanned the entire matte dial era, many collectors believe that the stark utilitarian aesthetic of the matte dial is most representative of this iconic Rolex dive watch reference.
This particular Rolex Submariner 5513 watch dates back to approximately 1967 is fitted with an original ‘meters first’ matte dial, which represents the very first matte dial variation that was fitted to reference 5513 Submariner watches. Additionally, the tritium lume on the dial and hands has developed a rich, symmetrical patina that has taken on a warm cream color, making this particular watch an excellent example of the legendary matte dial ref. 5513 Rolex Submariner.
MOVEMENT: Watch is functioning. This pre-owned Rolex comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
