Rolex introduced the Sea-Dweller reference 1665 in 1967 as an innovative watch for deeper dives (the reference 1665 had a depth rating of 2000 feet versus 660 feet on a regular Submariner) and added a Helium Escape Valve (HEV) for use for saturation dives. While the earliest examples had one or two lines of red text on the dial, Rolex later changed the dial to have all the text in white, such as on the present watch, and Sea-Dweller was in larger print than its predecessors, earning these later examples of the Sea-Dweller reference 1665 the nickname “Great White”. The reference 1665 is relatively uncommon, particularly when compared to Submariners from the period, as it was truly a purpose-built tool watch that was generally purchased only for serious commercial diving purposes unlike the Submariner that had more mass appeal. The present watch features a rare and desirable “Mark 1” dial and is a stunning watch.
The "Great White" "Mark 1" dial appears to be original and in good condition, with tritium material that has aged to a warm, creamy color. The hour and minute hands appear to be original and match the tritium luminous material on the dial. The seconds hand appears to be original, but relumed, with luminous material repainted.
The case appears to be unpolished, with scratches and wear. The case back appears to be original, and has the name of original owner engraved on it.
The bezel insert was previously not original and has been corrected to be period correct. The watch as shown in the video is not how it will be delivered. The outer bezel assembly appears to be original.
The bracelet appears to be unpolished, and is unusual because it is stamped with reference 93150 on one side of the bracelet, and 78360 on the other side, and also has 580 end links. Date code reads VD, which corresponds to circa 1979. The clasp has initials engraved below the Rolex coronet.
Date wheel appears to be original, with silver background, which is correct for the period. The crown appears to be the original Triplock crown. The watch is running and keeping time, and a one-year service warranty is included. The bracelet has 11 links, and will approximately fit an 8 inch wrist.
