Choosing the Right Diamond

A little education can go a long way when it comes to procuring a loose diamond. This page will answer all of your questions regarding the characteristics of a diamond and explains how certain features affect its appearance. We want to give you all of the pertinent information needed to choose the perfect piece.

A Diamonds Shape

First, a diamond's shape (round, cushion, pear) describes the diamond as viewed from above. And while there is a history behind each shape and how it came to be, a certain affinity to these different forms is simply a matter of personal taste. Before you begin your search for your ideal loose diamond you will need to decide what shape you would like.

GIA Diamonds

A certified GIA diamond is often a good choice.  Bob's offers a spectacular collection of traditional round diamonds, and also carries a myriad of more modern shapes, such as emerald princess pieces. All of our wholesale diamonds are certified and graded by the GIA or the AGSL, which grades their FL-SI2 clarity, D-J color and cut ratings, i.e., Ideal, Very Good, Good, or Fair. Bob’s features only the finest quality loose diamonds available, and we offer them in round, princess-cut, Asscher-cut as well as emerald-cut shapes.  Take a look at our GIA diamonds by using the diamond selection tool above.

The Four Cs

diamond cut

Cut

A diamond's cut is its most important characteristic. When it comes to the cut, the key thing to remember is that the cut of a loose diamond determines its brilliance. The better the cut, the more beautiful its sparkle. The cut of a diamond will also determine the style of the piece that you use it in. There are six major types of diamond cuts, which are as follows:

  • Rounds Brilliant
  • Oval
  • Pear
  • Marquise
  • Heart
  • Emerald

Because no other characteristic has a greater influence on a diamond's appearance, Bob's Watches recommends selecting the highest cut grade within your budget. When a diamond is cut properly, light filters through the top of the diamond, or what gemologists refer to as the table. This is why the cut is so vital; it is an objective way to measure the diamond's light performance, or what most of us think of as its sparkle. Loose diamonds that are poorly cut do not radiate. If they are cut too shallow, their light will escape out of the bottom; cut too deep and the sparkle will leak out of the sides.

diamond color

Color

When it comes to measuring a diamond's beauty, color is the second most important feature on the "C" scale. This is due to the fact that the human eye first detects a diamond's sparkle, then its color. And the term color grade actually refers to a stone ’s lack of color. For example, color manifests itself in a diamond as a pale yellow; however, white diamonds, which have little or no color, receive a higher quality grade than those with visible color. A color grade of “D” denotes an excellent rating (the highest possible), while a "Z" is the lowest grade.

diamond clarity

Clarity

A diamond’s clarity aspect distinguishes its imperfections. Although most loose diamonds have a few tiny flaws, or blemishes, they are not something the layman can decipher and do not affect the stone’s beauty. Even a gemologist will tell you that clarity has the least influence on a diamond’s value since these imperfections tend to be microscopic. Of course there are those rare pieces that are flawless, and these receive the highest clarity grades.

diamond carat

Carat Weight

Measuring a diamond is not exactly what you may have heard (or read): The measure of a caret depicts a diamond's weight and not necessarily its size. Most people think the view from above is how a diamond should be measured -- after all, diamonds are usually presented to us in a ring setting -- but to really understand a stone’s actual size, carat weight needs to be evaluated on a) the distance in millimeters across the top of the diamond and b) the diamond's cut grade.

Uses of Loose Diamonds

Loose diamonds have a number of uses, especially in jewelry. I am sure you have heard the song “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” Take a quick look around you and you will most certainly come to the conclusion that it’s true. For centuries this closely held stone has been a symbol of love and eternity. They are found in some of the world’s oldest pieces of jewelry and are given in engagement rings as a token of romance and lifelong commitment. There are a number of different types of diamonds for sale and they are used in a variety of different ways. Some of the many uses of diamonds include:

  • Rings
  • Earrings
  • Necklaces
  • Bracelets
