It's rumored that Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf developed the Air-King wristwatch after hearing that the brave pilots of the British Royal Air Force often chose to wear their personal Rolex watches over their military-issued timepieces. He set out to produce a line that was accurate, sophisticated, and affordable, and the Air Series was born. The Air-King is the only member of the Air-Series that remains in production today and is a widely sought-after collector's item. The ref. 5500 boasts an incredible production run of nearly forty years and is widely available on the preowned Rolex market in a variety of feature sets. The example that is presented here today runs on a calibre 1520 Perpetual movement and pairs the stainless steel finish with a matching silver dial topped with silver indices and hands.
