The reference 6263 Cosmograph Daytona was introduced to the market in approximately 1969 as the final evolution of the manually-wound generation of Rolex Daytona watches that had existed since the early 1960s. Featuring screw-down pushers for greater water resistance, the ref. 6263 also features the accompanying ‘Oyster’ designation on its dial, and the updated Valjoux 727 for improved timekeeping and reliability.
Produced until the late 1980s alongside its metal bezel companion reference, the ref. 6265, the majority of Daytona 6263 watches were crafted from stainless steel, with only a small percentage constructed from solid yellow gold. While exact production numbers remain unconfirmed, it is estimated that Rolex produced only around 100 gold ref. 6263 watches per year, between both references. Additionally, due to their premium status within the Rolex catalog, all gold Daytona models received chronometer-certified movements beginning in the early 1970s, and many examples can be found with the accompanying ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’ text on their dials.
Backstory: This incredibly rare and remarkably well-preserved Rolex Daytona 6263 in solid 14k yellow gold is completely fresh-to-market and comes directly from a local Southern California family of the original owner who was the President and Owner of a prominent real estate development and property management company. Although the bezel has a couple slight cracks and displays minor signs of being worn, the case still has sharp edges and retains its original MK2 pushers. Most notably is this watch's extremely well-preserved champagne dial, which still has all of its luminous dots intact. This dial features the 'Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified' text denoting its chronometer-certified movement, while it lacks the 'DAYTONA' branding that became standard on later examples of this legendary Rolex chronograph reference.
MOVEMENT: Chronograph is functioning. The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that we do not guarantee the future working of the movement.
