Among all vintage Rolex watches, it is the various ‘Paul Neman’ Daytona references that rank as the most desirable and valuable Rolex models in existence. The most expensive Rolex watch ever sold was a Paul Newman Daytona (Paul Newman’s very own personal example), and possibly no timepiece is more iconic and representative of the world of vintage watch collecting than the Rolex Paul Newman Daytona.
The Rolex Daytona collection was launched in 1963 as a duo of two references: the ref. 6239 that featured a metal tachymeter bezel, and the ref. 6241 that featured its tachymeter bezel in black acrylic. Fitted with manual-wind chronograph movements, acrylic crystals, and pump-style chronograph pushers, these two Daytona models represented the first time that Rolex chronograph watches had featured tachymeter scales on their bezels, rather than printed along the periphery of their dials.
Dial options included silver with black registers or black with white registers; however a small number of these Rolex Daytona watches were fitted with ‘exotic’ dials that featured a more stylized aesthetic and an Art-Deco font for the numerals. It is estimated that only 1 in 20 Rolex Daytona watches were produced with these exotic dials, and while they were not all that popular while they remained in production, Hollywood actor Paul Newman famously wore one in his personal, life, forever cementing the ‘Paul Newman’ nickname and ultimately helping elevate them to the pinnacle of vintage watch collecting.
This particular ref. 6241 Paul Newman Daytona has an estimated production date of approximately 1970, placing it near the very end of this reference’s production run. Additionally its original ‘reverse panda’ Paul Newman dial features a black surface with a white minute track and registers, along with red printing details. These tri-color vintage Paul Newman Daytona watches are among the most coveted timepieces in existence, and make for the ultimate addition to any serious watch collection.
Last year, a story made headlines throughout the industry about a Canadian woman who found a Rolex Paul Newman Daytona ref. 6241 in between the cushions of a couch that she had purchased from the thrift store. The woman contacted the store, and after no one came forward to claim the watch, the ultra-collectable vintage Rolex became hers. This is that exact watch, which we purchased directly from the woman, and are proud to offer as part of our 'Fresh Finds' auction.
