An Argument for a Watch with Your Tuxe

Black tie events can be a bore. Especially if you attend enough of them, you already know they’re essentially the same. Champaign, horderves, the same old chit chat. And that got us thinking. Why are we also still buying into the tired notion that black tie attire should exclude a watch? Are we so bored we don’t even give it a second thought anymore?

The idea behind this was that wearing a watch was a bit taboo, signaling you’re more focused on the clock rather than the event and good time you should be having. But since we’ve already established these events can be quite, dry, why not toss tradition aside? We think it’s time to change things up a little, time to sport a watch that steals glances and starts interesting conversations. Here are a few watches we love and think you will too.

Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse

A traditional dress watch reinvented with a stroke of unbridled modernity, the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse is eye-catchingly understated. Yes, its uncluttered ebony black face with simple hour markers and a sleek, thin, case make this watch so effortlessly elegant that admirers might lose track of the conversation while stealing glances. You’ll notice, and smirk, finally changing the conversation to your storied watch, released in rose gold as the 50th anniversary edition. Don’t forget to tell them about the mechanical Caliber 240 inside with 161 parts, 27-jewels, and a 48-hour power reserve, too.

White Gold Diamond Bezel Daytona

If you’re looking for something a bit sportier and with more provenance — as well as pomp — a diamond-encrusted white gold Rolex Daytona ought to do the trick. The large 40mm case will peek out of your jacket sleeve, the diamonds and white gold catching the crystal chandelier light and sparkling back even brighter. The poor sucker sitting next to you is going to wish he brought sunglasses, or that he looked half as good. Tell him about the Automatic chronograph movement, then circle back to that bright white face and the 124 diamonds that sit around it before reminiscing about Paul Newman.

Jaeger Lecoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual

“What a beautiful night, did you see the full moon, too?” You say to the chap next to you, looking up then down to your wrist. Not only does the ultra-thin white gold 39mm case tell you the hour and minute, it reads the date, month, year and moonphase with its perpetual three-hand movement. Be sure to note that it takes into account leap years, too. The selenite-gray colored dial is unique in itself, drawing your eye in to admire all the wonderful complications. Point them out as the elegant Dauphine hands swing around the face, catching the moonlight like the polished bezel.
