West New York resident Kuriko Tsukiyama has officially been named a Rolex All-American in golf. The prestigious designation provides her a spot on the Junior All-American team. The 17-year-old has been home schooled as she has prepared for college and a possible future as a pro golfer.
Tsukiyama’s dedication has turned the heads of college recruiters and golf pros alike. In a recent interview, she shared that she has verbally committed to the University of Arizona following her high school graduation. The focused athlete became the youngest athlete in 2010 when she became the youngest golfer (at 14) to win the New Jersey State Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur title. She was also victorious in 2010 when she won a junior national title.
Her father Osamu has been a true motivator for her, as he introduced her to the sport when she was 7-years-old. “He had been playing for a while recreationally,” shared Tsukiyama. “I wanted to go with him and he finally agreed. He was glad one of his children decided to go play golf with him.” After her first round of golf, the youngster was hooked and worked to spend as much of her free time at the golf course as possible.
“I really loved playing golf and wanted to play all the time. I played my first US Kids World Championship and thought I’d go for it.”
