The TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Tourbillon is a Phantom Menace at $21k

Paul Altieri

TAG Heuer has obviously taken note of the trend for blacked-out watches of late and is looking to capture some of the high-end sides of the business with its latest offerings. The TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Tourbillon Phantom continues the manufacturer’s evolution of the classic Carrera timepieces, dating to the Heuer days and originally designed for motor racing enthusiasts. The stealthy 45mm watch is equipped with a darkened version of TAG’s in-house Calibre Heuer 02T movement, an automatic chronograph combined with a COSC-certified tourbillon normally associated with more prestigious luxury watch brands. Let’s take a deeper look into TAG Heuer and their collectible watch.

The watch is mainly a mix of black gold-plated and black PVD-covered parts along with a partly skeletonized black opaline dial. The titanium case gets the PVD treatment while the bezel and lugs are made of black carbon. The transparent sapphire caseback lives up to the Phantom moniker, allowing the movement to be visible when the watch is turned face down. TAG Heuer priced the watch at $21,500 apiece. Similarly to Omega’s Speedy Tuesday Edition, TAG Heuer made this watch a limited edition timepiece (only 500 will be available).  The TAG Heuer Carrera Carbon Tourbillion comes on a matte black alligator strap with a rubber inner lining. If the tourbillon is too much or to menacing, TAG is also offering straight-up chronograph versions with rose gold or blue rhodium accents.

These are also 45mm and are fitted with TAG’s Calibre Heuer 02 with a power reserve of over 80 hours. The rose gold version features a black dial with rose gold-plated indexes and hands, as well as 18k rose gold lugs. The other version has blue highlights on its lacquered subdial, central second hand, indexes and small second counter at 6 o’clock. While blue rhodium lugs might have been indicated, on this watch they are black carbon to match the bezel. Both watches also feature transparent sapphire casebacks. There will be 350 pieces made of the rose gold and 750 pieces of the blue, quiet low numbers for the brand.
