It doesn’t get much better than a Rolex Submariner timepiece and a Rolex GMT-Master II. Created for a specific purpose, these Rolex tool watches have been a part of Rolex’s catalog since their debut in the 1950s. The Submariner was built for divers, while the GMT-Master was manufactured for pilots. Decades later, these two models remain as some of the brand’s most popular watches and it’s easy to see why. Aesthetically attractive and technically sound, this duo of Rolexes perfectly illustrates the enduring quality of a stainless steel Rolex sports watch. Here we take a look at the most current references of the Submariner and GMT-Master II.

At Baselworld 2010, Rolex unveiled the stainless steel Submariner ref. 11610LN to replace the preceding ref. 16610. Since the Sub 11610LN is one of Rolex’s newest watches, it features the Cerachrom ceramic bezel. Not only prized for its resistance to scratching and fading, the Rolex ceramic bezel also adds a beautiful look to the watch. Its sheen is very different to the past acrylic bezels of older Rolex models.

The Submariner ref. 11610LN retains the 40mm Oyster case, however, it does wear larger than its predecessor thanks to the wider lugs and bigger crown guards. The black dial includes larger lume plots and luminous Mercedes style hands that give off a blue glow in low light. Referred to as the Chromalight display by the brand, the watch can glow in the dark for up to eight hours.

Furthermore, the ref. 11610LN has enhancements to its stainless steel Oyster bracelet. In addition to including new solid links, which provides more resilience to “stretching”, it also has a Glidelock clasp for easy fit adjustment.

Contained within a diver’s watch, the Caliber 3135 within the Submariner 116710LN can be safely submerged down to 1,000 feet (300 meters). The automatic mechanical movement offers 48 hours of power reserve and is, as all modern Rolex watches, COSC-certified.

While the Submariner is made to explore the deep, the GMT-Master II is meant to fly the skies. Featuring the ultra practical extra 24-hour hand and rotating bezel, wearers of the GMT-Master II can keep track of three different time-zones—ideal for the globetrotters of the world.

The newest stainless steel GMT-Master II was launched at Baselworld 2007 with the reference number 116710LN. The ref. 116710LN was a completely redesigned GMT-Master II, featuring a ceramic bezel, the bulkier Oyster case, and the enhanced Oyster bracelet. Moreover, the Triplock winding crown replaced the Twinlock one and the ref. 116710LN housed the new Caliber 3186. All of these enhancements and modifications actually laid the foundation for most of Rolex’s modern sports watches.

A distinguishing characteristic of the GMT-Master II ref. 116710LN is the green GMT-hand matching the green “GMT-MASTER II” label on the black dial. This is the only flash of color on an otherwise all black and white dial and bezel configuration.

If you’re in the market for a classic luxury sports watch that boasts a host of modern features, then take a closer look at the newest stainless steel Submariner and GMT-Master II.
