Spotlight: The Rolex Milgauss

July 15, 2018

BY Paul Altieri

Today we’re putting the spotlight on the Rolex Milgauss, the watch famous for its lightning bolt second hand. When this watch was first released back in 1956, it was one of the first watches in the world that could keep time while being exposed to strong magnetic fields thanks to ferromagnetic alloys inside the Oster case to protect the perpetual movement from up to 1,000 gauss. It quickly became popular amongst scientists and engineers for its functionality, but watch-lovers also clamored over this watch for its striking looks similar to the Submariner.

At one point, the lightning bolt second hand was a blight on the Rolex name

At one point in time, the lightning bolt second hand was a blight on the Rolex name

But in the 1970’s, Rolex got the idea to nix the iconic lightning bolt second hand, and from there, the watch went down hill. So much so, it’s rumored that dealers were practically giving them away to clients because they just couldn’t move them off the shelves. Soon after, the watch was discontinued entirely.

Fast forward to 2007, Rolex brought back the lightning bolt watch and collectors had their passions for this unique watch reignited. Here we’ll highlight a few favorite modern variations and who knows, maybe by the end you’ll want to get your hands on a unique Milgauss of your own.

This handsome 40mm case with a black face, luminous hour markers and orange accents is exactly what this watch is about — uniqueness. The stainless steel case and Oyster bracelet are durable, sporty and timeless. But the face, with those bold colors and iconic lightning bolt hand remind you that this ref. 16400 isn’t your typical Rolex.

Besides that, this model is outfitted with an automatic 3131 movement, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, 31 jewels, waterproof screw-down crown. This watch is a beautiful example of how Rolex can make form meet function.

We bet you haven’t seen a Rolex that looks like this. And now you’re wondering, where do I focus first? That brilliant blue face or the anniversary green scratch-resistant sapphire crystal? There’s also that striking orange lightning bolt second hand that pops against the cool green and blue, as well as the second markers etched in orange — the juxtaposition undeniably unique. Built to work brilliantly in harsh conditions, it’s fitting to see the 904L stainless ref. 16400GV outfitted in such striking colors.

Besides killer looks, this watch is outfitted with world-class features like an automatic 3131 movement, waterproof screw-down crown, a smooth and clean bezel, and an inner reflecting ring.
