Rolex’s history with the Daytona Speedway began in 1964 when the luxury brand became the official sponsor of the famed race track.  While the speedway’s namesake watch the Cosmograph Daytona, may not have begun as a driver’s watch, it is most commonly associated with the fast-paced world of professional driving.  In fact, its case boasts every amenity a driver needs to keep perfect time while on the track, from a highly reliable and shock resistant perpetual movement and chronograph functions, to a Tachymeter bezel that can measure speeds of up to 400 kilometers per hour.  Each year the winner of the 24 hours at Daytona is awarded with a 6-digit Cosmograph Daytona.

The Daytona has a long and rich history.

The Daytona as we know it today debuted in 1965.  This was the first instance that the name “Daytona” appeared on the dial of the Rolex Cosmograph.  Since that time, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona has undergone an impressive transformation, including the upgrade from a printed Tachymeter bezel to an engraved variation.  The Daytona also transitioned from non-Rolex movements, such as the Zenith El Primero, to in-house Rolex manufacture movements and began to utilize superior materials such as sapphire crystal, resilient 904L stainless steel, and precious metals.

The newer ref. 116509 is unlike any other Daytona in the Rolex catalog.  From the bezel down to the Oysterlock clasp, the entire exterior of this mens sports watch is crafted from impeccable 18 karat white gold.  While it still maintains a masculine and powerful fit on the wrist via a 40mm Oyster case and three-link bracelet, the Daytona’s rare all-gold finish earns it a spot among some of the most luxurious timepieces in the Rolex catalog.  When the white gold and blue dial variation of the ref. 116509 debuted at Basel World 2016, collectors were immediately impressed with the blue hue that was unique to this newer Daytona and seemed to blend flawlessly with the white gold finish of the case and bracelet.

A True Driver’s Watch

As mentioned above, Rolex outsourced the Daytona movement to Zenith before manufacturing the calibre 4130 movement completely in-house.  Developed by Rolex to withstand the rigors of professional racecar driving, the calibre 4130 movement utilizes a Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and a sophisticated chronograph complication.  The stopwatch functions, Tachymeter bezel, and Rolex movement create a reliable tool watch for professional drivers.

Rolex watches offer the highest quality on the market today and boast incredible resale value.  As such, investing in a pre-owned white gold Rolex Daytona is one of the smartest decisions you can make.  Not only does the white gold finish add serious value to your watch box, but its sporty design, complete with stopwatch functions and a Tachymeter bezel, is the ultimate in sports watch functionality.
