The Golden Globes
The Golden Globes is a phenomenal event. In the world of Hollywood celebrities, you can usually take it for granted that most A-list stars are being paid to wear the watches on their wrists, with the exception of vintage pieces and those made by Rolex. This does not enter into financial arrangements with anyone except its official spokesmodels or “testimonees” as they’re called. Essentially you can assume at the very least that the watches worn by boldfaced names were given for free. The red carpet at the Golden Globes is of course, prime product placement territory for brands that are willing to ante up in exchange for publicity.
Omega Speedmaster Professional
This year was no exception, with the likes of Piaget, Montblanc and Harry Winston making appearances on the wrists of well-turned-out attendees (and in many cases their equally famous wives and girlfriends). In the case of brand ambassadors, it of course, comes as no surprise that they represent on the red carpet. Hence Globes presenter Eddie Redmayne, an Omega brand ambassador, showed up with a Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional. He was anticipating the Swiss firm’s Speedy Tuesday initiative.

Presenter Matt Damon was the standard bearer for Piaget, sporting the Piaget Altiplano. Billed as the world’s thinnest mechanical watch, in 18k rose gold with a grey dial and white gold Piaget cuff links to match. Nominee, Piaget brand ambassador Ryan Reynolds of Deadpool fame wore a Piaget Altiplano. It is 38mm with an 18k rose gold case on a black alligator strap. Piaget has always had a strong Hollywood presence and appears in the new Jackie Kennedy biopic as well. It is worn by Peter Sarsgaard as Robert F. Kennedy.

Meanwhile, nominee Christian Slater wore Harry Winston’s 42mm Midnight Retrograde Second Automatic. A watch in white gold with 34 jewels, 28,800 vibrations per hour and a 72-hour power-reserve, with matching diamond cufflinks set in 18k white gold. And nominee Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) wore the Montblanc Heritage Chronometrie Automatic watch with a rose gold bezel on a black leather strap. As he’s gaining a reputation for being one of Hollywood’s best-dressed men style reporters paid close attention.
The iconic Bulgari Octo watch, a tribute to Italian artists like Leonardo da Vinci, was the timepiece of choice for two big stars, Colin Farrell and Jeff Bridges; Bridges also sported Montblanc cufflinks. Actor Jeremy Renner, who is slated to play Steve McQueen in an upcoming biopic, wore a 40mm Tiffany CT60 stainless steel dual time watch, among the most understated timepieces seen on the big night. And last but not least nominee Dev Patel (Lion), an IWC brand ambassador, wore an IWC Mark XVIII Big Pilot – a beautiful watch to have on your wrist whether you’re getting paid or not.
