Unleashing the green beast
It doesn’t take long for Rolex collectors and enthusiasts to coin a catchy name for standout Rolex models and the Submariner Date 116610LV is no different. Originally released at Baselworld 2010, and now commonly referred to as “The Hulk”, the ref. 116610LV is a full stainless steel Submariner Date sporting, as the nickname suggests, a green bezel and dial.

Say Hello To The Rolex Hulk
The unidirectional rotatable bezel of the Submariner Date 116610LV, known as the Hulk, is of course equipped with the Cerachrom insert – Rolex’s scratch and fade resistant ceramic material found on their sports models. And to achieve the hue that Rolex calls “green gold”, the green insert is coated with a thin layer of pure gold via a PVD process. The green color carries onto the Maxi dial, setting the perfect contrasting backdrop for the luminescent-coated hands, hour-markers and white text. And when the Submariner Date 116610LV finds itself in the dark, the blue glow of the luminescence can last up to eight hours – that’s double the time of other standard glow-in-the-dark materials.
This Rolex Hulk ref. 116610LV earned its name for its green dial and bezel.
Because this is Rolex’s essential diving watch, the 40mm stainless steel Oyster case of the ref. 116610LV features the screw-down caseback and winding crown, as well as the Triplock triple waterproof system making the piece waterproof to 1000 feet. The stainless steel Oyster bracelet comes with the Glidelock Extension System offering an additional 20mm in bracelet length, meaning a diver can easily strap the Submariner onto the outside of his wetsuit to accompany him on dives. Another important detail for divers is the luminescent dot at the zero position on the bezel, which allows for easy legibility in dark underwater environments to keep track of diving times and decompression stops.
Beating at the core of the Submariner Date 116610LV is the Rolex Caliber 3135, a perpetual, self-winding mechanical movement. This COSC certified caliber is outfitted with the Rolex blue Parachrom hairspring built from a mix of niobium and zirconium, making the hairspring both antimagnetic and more shock resistant. Aside from the center hour, minute and seconds hands function, the Caliber 3135 also offers the instantaneous date function with rapid setting, and stop-seconds for precise time setting. Magnifying the date window at 3 o’clock is the iconic Cyclops lens on the scratch proof sapphire crystal.
Rolex continues to reserve the integrity of the watch.
Robust, functional and highly attractive, the Rolex Submariner collection is one of Rolex’s most, if not the most, popular. There are countless models within the Submariner family, from steel, to gold to a mix of both, with various bezel and dial color combinations. Yet, the green and steel combo of the Submariner Date 116610LV “Hulk” is one that is aesthetically bold, commands attention, and is instantaneously recognizable. A superhero both on land and in the sea.
