4 Notable Characteristics on this Vintage GMT-Master ref 1675

BY Paul Altieri

The Rolex GMT Master ref 1675 is one of the most popular vintage watches among the brand’s offering and it was in production from the very late 1950s until 1980. During its 21-year production run the ref. 1675 underwent several updates and enhancements, such as crown guard modifications, dial alterations, caliber changes, and many others.

The stainless steel ref. 1675 with the “Pepsi” bezel is one of the more prevalent versions available today, yet the collection offered several variants including different bezels colors as well as full or semi-gold options. One of the variations of the ref. 1675 is the two-two toned GMT-Master 1675/3 that carries some very interesting features worth taking a look at.

1. Rolesor Variation

This watch has a mixture of two metals, Gold and stainless steel.

The GMT-Master 1675 was first launched in 1959 with a stainless steel 40mm Oystercase and Oyster bracelet along with the iconic blue and red bezel. Over a decade later, during the 1970s, Rolex offered a two-toned yellow gold and stainless steel version with reference 1675/3. The mixing of the two metals is dubbed as Rolesor by Rolex and the 14k gold was found on the bracelet, bezel, winding crown. The use of the precious metal upped the luxury quotient of the quintessential pilot watch.

2. Black Bezel

The choice of using two colors on the bezel of a GMT-Master is not only done for aesthetic pleasure but also for practical reasons – to allow wearers to differentiate between day and night hours. An all-black bezel version of the reference 1675 was introduced in the early 70s and although it no longer distinguished between pre or post sunset, it was applauded for its sleek and masculine look. Against the two-tone metal construction of this key vintage GMT-Master 1675 and matching black dial, the black bezel with gold colored numerals works beautifully.

3. Dial

The dial of this particular GMT-Master 1675/3 is where many of the notable attributes can be found. First and foremost, it is what is commonly referred to as the “nipple” dial thanks to the cone shape of some of the gold hour-markers – a very distinct characteristic in comparison to the more common flatter lume plots usually found on Rolex GMT dials. Also, the watch is furnished with a black glossy gilt dial that boasts a golden Rolex logo crown at 12 o’clock rather than the printed crowns used in later models.

4. Jubilee Bracelet

During the first decade of the GMT-Master 1675’s manufacturing it was only offered on the Oyster bracelet and in 1968 Rolex gave the option between an Oyster bracelet and a Jubilee bracelet. This specific two-toned GMT-Master 1675/3 sports the Jubilee bracelet with the center three links in 14k yellow gold.

With its combination of steel and gold, along with the black bezel and black dial configuration and dual time zone functionality, the GMT-Master 1675/3 was a glamorous sports watch option, especially for those among the chic jet-set lifestyle.
