The six-digit reference Daytona watches made their debut at Baselworld in 2000 where the previous Zenith El Primero movements were replaced with Rolex’s in-house Caliber 4130. The COSC-certified Caliber 4130 automatic chronograph movement has several advantages including fewer components for improved reliability, the Parachrom hairspring for increased resistance to external elements, and 72 hours of power reserve.
Part of the appeal of the Rolex Daytona is that it’s so familiar since its aesthetic has fundamentally stayed the same over the course of its history.
Part of the appeal of the Rolex Daytona is that it’s so familiar since its aesthetic has fundamentally stayed the same over the course of its history. The Daytona 116509 sports the characteristic 40mm Oyster case with the screw-down crown and screw-down pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock. Its sporty look is further enforced by the three-link Oyster bracelet. The bracelet is especially comfortable thanks to the Easylink system allowing the wearer to extend the bracelet up to 5mm. The ref. 116509 is topped with the tachymetric engraved fixed bezel securing the scratchproof sapphire crystal protecting the dial. The white metal may be understated, so there is a chocolate dial Daytona if that catches your interest. This particular Daytona is crafted in 18k white gold — a true illustration of a luxury sports watch. Always committed to using the finest materials, Rolex actually has its own in-house foundry to ensure the perfect mixture of elements to produce the best gold possible.

The dial of the Rolex Daytona 116509 is where the chronograph taps into some vintage styling. The silver dial sets the perfect contrast to the black rings of the registers at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock as well as to the black Arabic numerals. The “Panda” style dial comes particularly alive thanks to the red numbers and hands on the subsidiary dials, in addition to the red chronograph center hand. Other dial options of the Daytona 116509 include a black dial and at this year’s Baselworld, a blue dial version joined the white gold Cosmograph Daytona lineup.
Up & Personal With The Dial
The Cosmograph Daytona is infused with as much excitement as the motorsports world it’s inspired by. This reference isn’t the only work of art from the Daytona line. From the 116509’s impeccable frame to the use of precious metals to the supreme engine revving within, this particular white gold Daytona is a superb wrist machine deserving to be at the top of the podium.
