(Credit: WSJ Magazine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Paul Newman<\/h2>\n<p><em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> has tracked down the story behind the epic timepiece, a ref. 6239, which is now going to be auctioned by Phillips in New York in on October 26. The auction house has put an extremely conservative pre-sale estimate of \u201cover $1 million\u201d on it. We\u2019d say it\u2019s worth at least $3.5 million, however, and we wouldn\u2019t be surprised if it brings in even more, perhaps tying the most expensive Rolex in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobswatches.com\/paul-newman-rolex-daytona\">story behind the Newman watch<\/a> is interesting enough for the <em>Journal<\/em> to devote 1,500 words to it. (credit: aBlogtoWatch.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Joanne Woodward<\/h2>\n<p>Newman himself had received the watch as a gift from his wife, Joanne Woodward, who is thought to have purchased it at Tiffany &amp; Co. for about $300 in the late 1960s, though it doesn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobswatches.com\/rolex-blog\/rolex-info\/history-rolex-tiffany-dials.html\">bear the store\u2019s signature on its dial<\/a>. She had the words \u201cDrive Carefully Me\u201d engraved on the back, and the original stainless-steel bracelet was replaced with an extra-wide black leather strap. (Credit: WSJ Magazine)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Phillip&#8217;s Auction<\/h2>\n<p>When James eventually decided to sell the watch he was put in touch with Phillips\u2019 senior consultant Aurel Bacs, one of the Rolex world\u2019s most important figures. \u201cThe first question you ask when you get interested in vintage watches is, \u2018Where is Paul Newman\u2019s Paul Newman?\u2019 \u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-paul-newmans-legendary-rolex-cosmograph-daytona-was-foundand-where-its-going-now-1496322396\">Bacs tells the <em>Wall Street\u00a0Journal<\/em><\/a>. \u201cEveryone knows that by the mid-\u201980s Newman is no longer wearing it, and nobody knows where it is. There is hardly a dinner with collectors where the conversation does not turn to this watch. Where is it, and how much will it make if it ever comes to market?\u201d We\u2019ll find out in October of course, and a significant portion of the proceeds will go toward the Nell Newman Foundation. Rolex has not been as active, or at least as visible, as other luxury brands in acquiring pieces like this for its own archive.
