That would be Auro Montanari, an altogether more dashing moniker suited to a stylish Italian whose Rolex collection has very few rivals in the world. Montanari, under his pen name, is the author of several landmark books on watch collecting that have become essential references including <\/span>100 Superlative Rolex Watches<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Patek Philippe Watches<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Omega Watches<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>A Journey into the Deep<\/span><\/i>, a look at a stunning assemblage of Rolex dive watches<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why the name John Goldberger?<\/h2>\n

\u201cI took the name [John Goldberger] to protect my privacy, and for fun,\u201d the author\/collector tells <\/span>Robb Report <\/span><\/i>in <\/span>an excellent new profile<\/span>. The magazine reveals that Montanari was the seller of one of the most significant vintage Rolexes ever offered at auction, the only <\/span>white gold Daytona<\/span><\/a> known to exist<\/span>. Known as the \u201cUnicorn,\u201d it was sold by Phillips in May for close to $6 million, which Montanari gave to a children\u2019s charity. Next year he\u2019s planning a new book titled <\/span>100 Superlative Rolex Watches Part II<\/span><\/i>, updating the out of print original. Though these days he\u2019s got more than just Rolex in his sights.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Everyone wants to know what brands now will gain value with time,\u201d he tells <\/span>Robb Report<\/span><\/i><\/a>. \u201cThe Omega and Longines watches already have the correct value on the market in my opinion. There are other watch companies, like Eberhard, Minerva, Universal, Movado, and Breitling, which are undervalued at the moment. They manufactured in the \u201840s and \u201850s magnificent and well-designed chronographs with exceptional movements.\u201d He\u2019s also got a passion for pocket watches, and surprisingly, vintage digital watches as well.<\/span><\/p>\n
