However, if we dig a little deeper, we\u2019ll quickly see that there are variations of these main case styles that warrant their own sub-collections. For example, at a glance, the Panerai\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> and the <\/span><span id=\"E119\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E121\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> 1950 cases look identical. Post-World War II, t<\/span><span id=\"E149\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">he monarchy was abolished by popular referendum<\/span><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E151\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">and Ita<\/span><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">ly became a democratic republic. With the birth of the Italian Republic, the <\/span><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Regia<\/span><span id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> Marina became the Marina <\/span><span id=\"E158\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Militare<\/span><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> (Military Navy<\/span><span id=\"E161\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">)<\/span><span id=\"E162\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">. Despite the changes to the Italian government and military, Panerai continued supplying the nation\u2019s navy with watches. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E164\"><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">However, the radium-based paint that Panerai patented as \u201cRadiomir\u201d in 1916 to use for luminescence on its watches proved to be highly radioactive and dangerous. This large crown guard mechanism is operated by a small lever <\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">that pushes the crown securely into the case to create a watertight seal when locked and releases the crown for winding and setting when unlocked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E193\"><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">By the early 1990s, Italy reduced its military expenditures, which threatened <\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Panerai\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> business since its revenue was dependent on the needs of the navy. Panerai was forced to pivot and turned to the civilian market to sell its watches. In 1993, Panerai debuted three watch models to the public including one called the <\/span><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">. <\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">The maiden\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> was a modern take on the vintage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobswatches.com\/panerai\/\">Panerai watches<\/a> from the fifties, complete with the half-moon crown guard mechanism protruding from the right-hand side of the <\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">44mm cushion-shaped <\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">case. <\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">The Panerai\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> watch quickly became <\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">the brand&#8217;s<\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">\u00a0flagship watch model. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E220\"><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">In 2002, (by this time, Panerai already belonged to <\/span><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Richemont<\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">), Panerai released a limited edition watch in the form of the <\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> PAM 127. This was a faithful replica of the 1950\u2019s Panerai <\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">6152\/1 <\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">watch, including the 47mm cushion-shaped case<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> modeled after the<\/span><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> original <\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">reference<\/span><span id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">, a highly domed crystal <\/span><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">shielding <\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">the dial, and of course, the crown protecting device.<\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> Panerai also added \u201c1950\u201d on the black time-only dial to remind people of the watch\u2019s vintage origi<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">ns. However, when viewed from the side<\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">, the <\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">differences immediately reveal themselves. The <\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Luminor<\/span><span id=\"E283\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> cases (sometime<\/span><span id=\"E284\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">s<\/span><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> referred to as \u201c<\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Bettarini<\/span><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> cases,\u201d named after <\/span><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Alessandro <\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Bettarini<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> w<\/span><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">ho was the <\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">head of <\/span><span id=\"E299\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">Panerai&#8217;s<\/span><span id=\"E301\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> mechanical design department<\/span><span id=\"E302\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E303\" class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">in the nineties) have shorter lugs, a downward sloping c<\/span><span class=\"qowt-font7-Calibri\">ase band, and a flatter crystal.
