You are looking for the longer of the two engravings. See the location table below if it is not there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Match the format to the table above.<\/strong> Count the characters. Numerals only, or numerals plus one letter, in the six to seven character range, puts you in the year prefixed era.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Read the first two digits as a year.<\/strong> A serial starting with 94 points to 1994. One starting with 02 points to 2002.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use the model to settle the decade.<\/strong> A two digit prefix cannot tell 1984 from 1994 on its own. The model&#8217;s launch date usually resolves it, and our team keeps a reference list of introduction years for exactly this step.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Confirm against any papers you have.<\/strong> A warranty card dated within a year or so of the serial year is a strong match. A card dated years earlier is a problem.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example one.<\/strong> A steel Tank Fran\u00e7aise with a serial beginning 96, six numerals total. The prefix suggests 1996. Cartier introduced the Tank Fran\u00e7aise in 1996, so 1986 is impossible, and the watch is an early production example. That is a nice thing to know, because early examples of a launch year model tend to hold collector interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Example two.<\/strong> A gold plated Must de Cartier Tank with a serial beginning 83. The Must line launched in the 1970s, so 1983 fits and 1993 also fits on paper. Here the case style and movement type break the tie. The tank shaped quartz movements Cartier used in the early 1980s look different from what came later, and our watchmakers can place the piece in a few seconds. If you are working alone, this is where you should slow down and compare your watch against dated examples of the same reference rather than trusting the two digits blindly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When the rule does not apply.<\/strong> A Ballon Bleu with a serial of six numerals and two letters cannot be dated from the engraving. The Ballon Bleu launched in 2007, so any example you find is a modern watch, and the year comes from the warranty card, the service history, or the reference number&#8217;s production window. I have wanted that advice gone for a long time. Counterfeiters copy genuine serial numbers, sometimes stamping the same real number onto hundreds of fakes. Finding your serial attached to a watch somewhere on the internet proves nothing in either direction. It is bad advice, and it is beneath what our team actually does.  Here is what we do instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Engraving quality under magnification.<\/strong> Cartier engraving is crisp, evenly deep, and consistently spaced. Under a loupe, the characters have clean walls. Fakes tend to show shallow, wandering, or laser burned characters with uneven depth from one digit to the next. This is the first check and it catches more counterfeits than any other single step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Format against era.<\/strong> We compare the serial format to the model and its production window using the table above. A Ballon Bleu with a six numeral serial and no letters is wrong. A Tank Fran\u00e7aise with a serial starting 88 is wrong, because the model did not exist in 1988. These mismatches are common on fakes, because counterfeiters copy a number without understanding the system behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Serial and case number agreement.<\/strong> The case number has to match the reference the watch claims to be. We see fakes with a case number belonging to a different size or a different model than the watch in hand. On our bench, a mismatch between the case number and the actual case is the single most frequent serial related tell on counterfeit Tanks that we decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Papers against the caseback.<\/strong> A genuine warranty card lists the serial and the reference. Both must match the engravings exactly, and the date on the card must make sense against the serial year for pre-2009 pieces. We also look at whether the card itself is right for the period, since Cartier has changed its card design over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the honest limits. A correct looking serial can sit on a fake watch. A genuine serial can be cloned onto many fakes at once. A serial cannot tell you whether the movement is original, whether the dial has been refinished, or whether the case has been polished to death. The serial check is the front door of authentication, not the whole house. It is the starting point for provenance. When the number, the case reference, the papers, and the watch itself all agree, you have something that can be verified, and verifiable watches are the ones buyers pay up for. In my experience the market has become far less forgiving of unverifiable pieces over the last several years, and I expect that to continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our CFO, Joe A., put it plainly when we were reviewing pricing on a batch of pre-owned Cartier pieces: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A watch we can document and a watch we cannot are two different assets, and the spread between them keeps widening. Provenance is not paperwork for its own sake.
