Case diameter is measured across the bezel from the 9 o’clock side to the 3 o’clock side, excluding the winding crown. Lug-to-lug is measured vertically, from the tip of the top lugs to the tip of the bottom lugs. Thickness is measured from the caseback to the highest point of the crystal.

Use digital calipers, not a ruler. Four factors beyond the three core measurements explain it.

Lug Shape and Thickness

Lug design changes perceived size more than a millimeter of diameter does. The current 41mm Submariner ref. 124060 and the previous 40mm ref. 114060 feel remarkably similar on the wrist because the older watch carries slightly thicker lugs. Go back further and the effect reverses: the ref. 116610 wears noticeably larger than the ref. 16610 despite both being 40mm, because its broad-shouldered case and heavier crown guards fill more of the wrist.

Bezel Proportions

Bezel width and slope alter wrist presence at identical case dimensions. The classic example is the vintage Daytona pair, refs. 6263 and 6265: identical case proportions, but the 6263’s wider, flat acrylic bezel gives it visibly more presence than the sloped steel bezel of the 6265. I love showing these two side by side; no spec sheet prepares you for the difference.

Crystal and Dial Opening

The larger the crystal relative to the case, the larger the watch feels. The Submariner and the Datejust 41 share a 41mm diameter, yet the Datejust wears bigger because its wide crystal and slim bezel devote more of the case to the dial. Dive watches hide size in their bezels; dress watches show it all.

Bracelet Width and Taper

Lug width, the gap between the lugs that sets your bracelet or strap width, runs about 20mm on most 36mm to 40mm Rolex models and 21mm on the current 41mm Submariner, and it shapes how the watch carries. A strongly tapered Jubilee wears smaller than a blocky Oyster of the same width, and a NATO strap makes any watch sit taller and larger. When a customer tells me a watch feels too big, the fix is sometimes the bracelet, not the case.

What Size Rolex Fits Your Wrist?

The right Rolex size for your wrist depends on your wrist circumference and, just as much, on the lug-to-lug of the specific model. My personal rule from the showroom floor: the lugs should never overhang the flat of your wrist. I feel like this rule should be followed by every watch collection. Here is how I guide customers.

Under 6.5 inches: 34mm to 39mm is the sweet spot. The Explorer 36, Datejust 36, OP 34, and Land-Dweller 36 all wear beautifully. I would steer you away from the Explorer II and Sea-Dweller; their lug-to-lug will overhang.

6.5 to 7.25 inches: almost the entire catalog is open to you. This is where the 36 versus 41 debate lives, and honestly, I like a 36mm on this wrist range more often than customers expect.

Over 7.25 inches: 40mm and up wears naturally, and the Sea-Dweller, Deepsea, and Sky-Dweller finally look proportional rather than imposing.

When looking at these watches online or in a display case, I have learned that the diameter alone will mislead you. The Submariner’s broad-shouldered case, what collectors call the Super Case on the previous generation, wears larger than its 41mm suggests, while the Land-Dweller’s thin 9.7mm profile makes a 40mm feel almost delicate. This is exactly why I publish the thickness and lug-to-lug in the chart above; Rolex does not, and those two numbers are the difference between a watch you wear daily and one that sits in the box.

“The single biggest mistake I see buyers make is shopping by diameter alone. A 40mm Daytona and a 41mm Submariner wear like two different watches because of lug-to-lug and case profile. Know all three numbers before you buy, or better yet, put it on your wrist.”

Joe Alessindrini, CFO at Bob’s Watches

What Sizes Rolex Buyers Actually Choose

The numbers I pulled from our own sales data settles the size debate better than any opinion. Across two years of Bob’s Watches sales, from August 2024 through August 2026, 40mm accounts for one in three of all Rolex watches sold, making it the most popular size by a wide margin. The 36mm case is second at roughly 21 percent of sales, and 41mm third at about 13 percent. Here is the number that surprises people: sizes 36mm and under make up over 40 percent of everything we sell. The market never actually abandoned classic sizing, whatever the marketing of the big-watch era suggested.

Speed tells its own story. The 41mm case is our fastest-moving size, selling in a median of 10 days from the moment it hits the site, with 26mm close behind at 12 days. The 40mm and 36mm sizes both median 15 days. When the two most in-demand sizes by velocity sit at opposite ends of the range, 41mm and 26mm, you have all the proof you need that there is no single “right” Rolex size.

Deciding between the two most common Datejust sizes? The current case size is at 12.5mm thick and 47.6mm lug-to-lug, with the Date version at roughly 155 grams on its Oyster bracelet. When I wear this watch I feel that it looks larger than the numbers suggest because of its wide bezel and flat caseback. I consider the Submariner the reference point every other dive watch is measured against, literally and figuratively. The discontinued 26mm Lady-Datejust accounts for nearly one in ten of all Rolex watches we sell, and its share of our sales grew year-over-year, from about 9 percent to over 10 percent. A size Rolex stopped making years ago is one of the strongest performers in our showroom, selling in a median of just 12 days. Women’s Rolex sizing has its own history: vintage cocktail watches ran as small as 12mm, the Oyster Perpetual was offered at 24mm until 2020, and the Lady Yacht-Master came in at 29mm. At the same time, every month I meet more women buying 36mm Datejusts, 36mm Explorers, and 41mm Oyster Perpetuals for themselves. My own preference is a 36mm, and I wear it without a second thought. Buy the size you love, not the size a marketing category assigns you.

Men’s and Unisex Rolex Sizes

Men’s Rolex sizes traditionally start at 36mm, and a 36mm Rolex is absolutely a men’s watch; it was the men’s standard for half a century, on wrists from Paul Newman’s to every president who wore a Day-Date 36. Perspective helps here: the average men’s watch in the 1950s measured just 33mm to 35mm. The 39mm to 41mm band is today’s mainstream, and anything above 42mm is a deliberate statement. The pre-owned market is where the whole size spectrum stays alive, since discontinued sizes like the 39mm Explorer and 26mm Lady-Datejust never really leave circulation.

Finding Your Rolex Size: A Final Word

Rolex sizing comes down to three numbers, and only one of them is printed in the catalog. Diameter gets the headlines, but thickness and lug-to-lug decide whether a watch disappears onto your wrist or fights it all day. Measure your wrist, check the chart above, and when two sizes both seem right, try both on. The answer is always obvious in person and almost never obvious on paper.

At Bob’s Watches we keep nearly the entire modern Rolex catalog, and much of the vintage one, physically in inventory, which is why we can measure what Rolex does not publish and why you can try sizes side by side in our showroom. If this guide leaves you between two sizes, come see us, or call and ask for me. Sizing conversations are my favorite part of this business.

Frequently Asked Questions

<bui-accordion faq-schema=""><bui-accordion-item open="" header="How do I measure a Rolex case size?">A Rolex case is measured with calipers across the bezel from the 9 o’clock side to the 3 o’lock side, excluding the winding crown. Lug-to-lug is measured vertically across the tips of the lugs, and thickness from the caseback to the top of the crystal. Including the crown is the most common measuring mistake and adds about two millimeters.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What is the biggest Rolex? What is the smallest?">The biggest Rolex in the current catalog is the 50mm Deepsea Challenge, followed by the 44mm Deepsea and Yacht-Master II. The smallest current Rolex is the 28mm Lady-Datejust, while the discontinued 26mm Lady-Datejust remains available pre-owned.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What size Rolex should I get for a small wrist?">A wrist under 6.5 inches is best served by Rolex models between 34mm and 39mm, such as the Explorer 36, Datejust 36, Oyster Perpetual 34, and Land-Dweller 36. Lug-to-lug matters more than diameter; keep it under about 45mm and the watch will sit within the flat of the wrist.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What sizes do women’s Rolex watches come in?">Women’s Rolex watches officially center on 28mm and 31mm sizes in the Lady-Datejust, Datejust, and Oyster Perpetual lines. In practice, women today buy across the full range from 28mm to 41mm, and the discontinued 26mm Lady-Datejust remains popular in the pre-owned market.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What size is a Rolex Submariner?">The Rolex Submariner is 41mm in diameter in its current generation, with an in-house measured thickness of 12.5mm and a lug-to-lug of 47.6mm. Earlier generations, produced from the late 1950s through 2020, measure 40mm.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What is the most popular Rolex size?">The most popular Rolex size is 40mm, which accounts for one in three pre-owned Rolex sales at Bob’s Watches over the past two years, led by the Submariner, GMT-Master II, and Daytona. The 36mm case is second at roughly 21 percent of sales, and sizes 36mm and under together make up over 40 percent of the market.</bui-accordion-item>
<bui-accordion-item open="" header="What size is a Rolex Daytona?">The Rolex Daytona is 40mm in diameter, and at 11.9mm thick with a 46.5mm lug-to-lug it is one of the slimmest sports models Rolex makes. The Daytona has never been produced in a larger modern case size.</bui-accordion-item>
</bui-accordion>

Measurement methodology: digital calipers and calibrated scale, watches from Bob’s Watches inventory, weights on full factory bracelets.
