They&#8217;re the accidents. Here&#8217;s what each of those flaws is, why it happens, and what the market does about it. That&#8217;s the whole premise. A rare, accidental flaw from an era long gone, one that will be perfectly serviceable on the wrist and in no way a watch polished into a bar of soap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last point is the one that trips people up. The crack pattern or the color shift in themselves are of no value whatsoever. They&#8217;re only of value on an original, well-preserved timepiece. The same characteristic on a rough example is just another defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One distinction to make before we get into the six families. Modern quality-control issues (a speck of dust under the crystal, a slightly crooked cyclops, etc.) are warranty issues. You take the watch back. The imperfections collectors seek are all vintage phenomena. They result from chemistry and radioactivity working slowly and accidentally over the decades. Rolex sorted out those &#8216;problems&#8217; many years ago, which is precisely why the surviving examples are of interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;A desirable imperfection is something the watch did to itself, slowly and evenly, over many years. Mid-century Rolex lacquers didn&#8217;t have any real UV protection, so the effect of many years of strong sun exposure would slowly cook the dial from black through to chocolate, bronze, and caramel. They became known as &#8216;tropical&#8217; dials because they were cooked in tropical sun, and the ones that did so evenly are some of the most sought-after vintage Rolex dials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The window matters: this occurs across watches broadly from the 1950s through the 1970s. We see it most frequently on the Explorer 1016, the Sea-Dweller 1665, and the GMT-Master 1675.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s what the genuine tropical examples have brought in at Bob&#8217;s. What I&#8217;m after before a tropical dial commands that kind of premium is a perfectly even tone edge to edge, no blotching at all, matching aged lume, and a case that hasn&#8217;t been polished round. An uneven, patchy brown will be seen as water damage, and the market will price it accordingly. In the mid to late 1980s, Rolex switched to a new glossy lacquer, and some batches of that lacquer were unstable. As the lacquer aged and flexed, it would craze into the spider pattern, which is what these dials are named after. You can find them on the Submariner 5513 and 5512, the GMT-Master 16750, and the Submariner 16800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the bit that the forums get completely wrong. The web doesn&#8217;t automatically add value. As of October 2026, our spider-dial 5513s have a median sale price of $9,995, compared with $12,995 for our other 5513s. This is because many spider dials are on late-production watches, and early 5513s with all the original bits outrank them in any case. It&#8217;s all about era and condition. The spider is just a bonus on top of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the whole package is right, though, it climbs fast. Tritium is mildly radioactive, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tritium\">half-life of approximately 12.3 years<\/a>. So, the glow would have faded within a couple of decades, while the paint itself continued to age. The plots and hands would have progressed from white to cream, to butterscotch, and, in the best cases, to a deep orange that collectors call a &#8216;pumpkin&#8217; dial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t mix up the two aging stories. Pumpkin is lume aging; tropical is the dial surface actually changing color. A watch can have either or both, and the names aren&#8217;t interchangeable, even if search engines make it seem like they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quick era tells on the dial text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&#8220;T SWISS T&#8221; or &#8220;T&lt;25&#8221; at six o&#8217;clock denotes a tritium dial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;SWISS&#8221; alone generally points to earlier radium or later transitional dials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;SWISS MADE&#8221; marks the modern Super-LumiNova era.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From our own sales: the 1997 two-tone Submariner 16613 with the original black tritium dial sold for $10,595, and the blue-dial example from the same year sold for $13,495 (both as of October 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that&#8217;s the family with the hard stop. Super-LumiNova doesn&#8217;t degrade or fade the same way, so a modern Submariner will still be showroom white in 40 years. They were produced by Rolex circa 1994 to 1995, using a Zapon varnish that didn&#8217;t block UV, so the subdial rings oxidized. The name comes from Osvaldo Patrizzi, the founder of the auction house Antiquorum, who first cataloged and noted the characteristic when selling his own collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s my answer on price, as the numbers out there are mostly just regurgitation. Our 16520 sales ranged from $19,595 to $36,995, with a median of $27,995 (Jan 2025 to Oct 2026), and none of those had a confirmed Patrizzi. The documented Patrizzi premiums come from auction results, where browning depth, overall condition, and provenance all factor into the hammer price. I won&#8217;t put a figure on a premium I haven&#8217;t actually sold. You&#8217;ll also hear the term &#8216;ghost dial,&#8217; but strictly speaking, the ghost is the bezel insert, not the dial. You&#8217;re looking for the best examples in the GMT-Master and Submariner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fade alone won&#8217;t get you a premium, and our data bears that out. A GMT-Master 1675 with a ghost bezel sold here for $13,995, which is spot on our $13,995 median for that reference as of October 2026. The faded bezel Submariner 16800s fared slightly better at $11,295 and $11,595, compared with a $10,595 reference median.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference between those two outcomes is what you see on the sales floor every month. You have the even, attractive fade which complements the watch as a whole and sells itself. You have a blotchy insert on a sharp case that looks like it&#8217;s been borrowed. Matching is the whole game for faded and degraded dials. Rolex destroys or replaces any defective parts, so the few printing errors that slipped past Quality Control and onto wrists are among the rarest dials in the catalog.
