The Rolex reference 6239 was the first model of the renowned "Daytona" series, and was manufactured from approximately 1964 through 1976. Only available in stainless steel, 14k and 18k gold, the ref. 6239 was the first chronograph with the tachometer scale engraved on the bezel. The "exotic" (a.k.a. "tropical" dial), later named the "Paul Newman" by collectors of this widely sought-after model, became available shortly after the 6239's appearance.
There are not many watches in this world that collectors, both new and experienced, will yearn for, such as they do with the Paul Newman. And with the recent discovery of Paul Newman’s original “Paul Newman” Daytona having been discovered, this watch is only going to continue to grow in popularity.
But, of course, condition is key when it comes to determining the true value of this watch. And in the world of Rolex collectors, determining the value of these watches is practically a science. The clarity of the sub dials, to having all lume points intact; all of these factors and more are weighed when considering the value, and this watch in particular happens to meet the criteria for many of these desirable points.
The case itself retains its correct proportions, the UPH bezel is still decipherable, the dial is surprisingly crisp for its age, as any collector would hope for, with prominent contrasts between the white sub-dials and the black dial.
