The Oyster Perpetual Submariner is part of a line of sport watches designed by Rolex specifically for the diving community, built for durability and their resistance to water and corrosion.  But you are just as likely today to find it on Wall Street, a golf course, or a Board room.  The watch is quintessentially considered the embodiment of Rolex - one of the World’s most widely recognized luxury brands.

An Iconic Timepiece

rolex submarinerThe Rolex Sub has been the iconic divers' watch since the 1950s, offering features which securely monitor diving time as well as the ability to go deeper than other waterproof models. The Submariner is also the only divers’ watch you can wear with a tuxedo.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner History

The Submariner was introduced in 1954 at Basel world.  As a steel watch made for diving there wasn't many places this model couldn't go.  From the depths of the sea to social gatherings the Submariner quickly became a hit among the masses.

Timeless Divers Watch

The Oyster Perpetual Submariner with Oyster bracelet and 40mm case was released in 1954 by Rolex. The stainless steel model with a black gloss dial is one of the most recognized luxury sport watches in the world, especially within the sailing and diving community.  The classic 16610 in stainless steel with a black dial is a staple among fashion watch enthusiasts who know and appreciate style and grace.

A Popular Sports Watch

submariner rolex oyster perpetualUp until the late 1950s, the Submariner was heavily associated with the persona of James Bond as it graced this hero's wrist on many on-screen adventures. This vintage model sported a smaller crown with no crown guard and is easily recognizable in the vintage Rolex community. The 16800 Sub was introduced in the 1970s featuring a scratch resistant sapphire bezel and Rolex Quick-set. The Rolex black watch worn by Mr. Bond has had a number of improvements since then.  An improved version of the 16610 with a better movement and bezel was released in 1989 and another in 2010 (the 116610) with ceramic bezel.

Model Information and Characteristics

Today, Rolex continues to market the watch in stainless steel, stainless and gold ( or two tone ) and solid 18k yellow gold Submariner watches. Rolex dial colors include black, blue and the special green edition 116610LV, which commemorates its 50th anniversary. The Submariner black being one of the classics.  The Sub is equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel with 15 minute markers. Some Submariner models, the 14060 and the newly released 114060 in 2012 do not carry a cyclops with the date on the dial. These are known as no date submariners, which harken back to the no date vintage submariners. The Submariner "no date" continues to be a popular wristwatch especially the new ceramic bezel 114060. Other popular Submariner models include the 116610 ceramic bezel, Rolex 16610, 116613, 16613, and 16800, and 1680.
