Rolex 1500

The reference 1500 is the stainless steel Date at its simplest. The size is a 34mm with a smooth domed bezel, acrylic crystal, and a caliber 1570-series movement that ran for two decades. These Rolex Date watches was produced from the early 1960s into the 1980s, it's the most understated vintage Rolex you can wear daily. How to Choose a Rolex 1500

  • Dial originality is the whole ballgame. More than case condition, more than the bracelet, the dial determines what a 1500 is worth. An untouched dial with even aging — silver, black, or a champagne that's warmed with time — carries a real premium. A refinished dial is not a dealbreaker on a watch you plan to wear, but it should be disclosed and reflected in the price. Check printing crispness, the alignment of the coronet, and whether the lume plots match the hands in color and tone.
  • What year, and does the movement match? The 1500 spans a long production run, and later examples generally have more refined movement execution. Confirm the caliber matches the reference and period, that the case back is correct and not over-polished, and that the serial and reference numbers between the lugs are still legible, a heavily polished case has soft, rounded lugs and thinned case sides that can't be undone.
  • Bracelet — original or replacement? Original period Oyster or Jubilee bracelets with correct end links and clasp codes are increasingly hard to find and priced accordingly. A correct-but-later bracelet is a reasonable compromise; an aftermarket bracelet should cost you nothing. Stretch in a vintage bracelet is normal and not repairable, only replaceable.
  • Accept the non-quickset. The 1500 requires advancing the hands through midnight repeatedly to set the date. If you wear a watch daily and rotate infrequently, this is a minor ritual. If you own a dozen watches and pick up each one cold, it's a genuine annoyance, in which case the later 15000-series is the same watch with a quickset date and sapphire crystal.
