Pre-owned Rolex Submariner ref 16803 (1988) was an important part of Rolex's history when it was released in 1984 because it was among the first two-tone Submariners. It predates the famous ref. 16613 and helped bridge the gap between the 4-digit and 5-digit generations. The stainless steel ref. 16800, released a few years prior in the late 1970s, introduced the collection to a safer uni-directional bezel, a more resilient sapphire crystal instead of acrylic, a Triplock screw-down crown, an increased 300-meter depth rating, and applied gold hour markers instead of painted lume. Each of these upgrades was also afforded to the ref. 16803 in steel and gold. Initially, the ref. 16803 featured vintage nipple hour markers. However, those were eventually replaced with flat, yellow gold hour markers filled with lume. Rolex only produced the ref. 16803 until the late 1980s, making it a prized and somewhat rare collector's item.
