In 1875, Audemars Piguet was started by two aspiring Swiss entrepreneurs, Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward Piguet. The two divided the work, with Audemars controlling the technical aspect of the business while Piguet was in charge of sales. By 1882, the company had become the largest watchmaking employer in Vaud. The company was successfully and able to expand, opening a separate branch in Geneva in 1889.
The company soon signed contracts with other companies, including Tiffany & Co., Cartier, and Bulgaria. These companies would purchase Audemars Piguet watches in bulk and resell them through their own retail locations. During this time, Audemars Piguet developed multiple market-changing watches including marvels like the smallest minute repeater watch and the world’s thinnest pocket watch.
Before World War II, the company produced an ultra-thin chronograph. This chronograph is a combination of a display watch and a stop watch and features the world’s thinnest automatic movement, created by Jaeger-LeCoultre.
In the 1970's Audemars Piguet continued to grow by developing a market for stainless steel luxury watches. The "Royal Oak" watch was unveiled during this time. This watch is named after the British Royal Navy Battleships, christened for the tree where King Charles II hid from his enemies. This watch is considered the first steel high-end sports watch. The company continued to produce innovative designs including the first ultra-thin selfwinding tourbillon wristwatch in 1986 and the smallest self-winding perpetual calendar watch in 1989.
Currently, Audemars Piguet is known as one of the top four Swiss watch making companies. Just as they did at the founding of the company, every watch is made using the old-fashioned, hand-made technique. Audemars Piguet develops about 26,000 timepieces per year. Today, the company is a world icon and is worn by many famous individuals, from sports icons like Novak Djokovic, Lionel Messi, and Lebron James to famous Hollywood stars like Kanye West and Jay Z.
Even after 100 years, Audemars Piguet takes pride in developing their own brand of fine luxury watches. Not only does Audemars Piguet offer amazing timepieces to the world, but they also own a world help program whose mission is to "contribute to the conservation of the forests in the world, the protection of the environment, and awareness among young people." Audemars Piguet is not just a watch company. Rather, they are a company of tradition, history, and one who offers a helping hand to the world. Audemars Piguet is certainly a standard for watch making around the world.
