Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona is the single most famous vintage watch in the world. Arguably no other timepiece has had a greater impact on the general public’s awareness of vintage watches as a whole, and it is the Rolex Paul Newman Daytona that sits at the top of nearly every collector’s wish list.
Incredibly rare in number and fiercely pursued by collectors from all around the world, these vintage Daytona watches get their name from Hollywood actor and racing driver Paul Newman. Characterized by their exotic dials that feature a unique Art Deco-style font, it is estimated that approximately 1 in 20 Rolex Daytona watches were originally produced with these dials and only a fraction of them are still in existence today. Paul Newman famously wore one in his personal life, forever cementing the “Paul Newman Daytona” nickname and ultimately resulting in these unique chronographs becoming the most valuable and collectable vintage Rolex watches in existence.
Dating back to 1968, this particular Rolex Paul Newman Daytona is a reference 6239 - the very first Rolex Daytona every produced and the exact same model that Paul Newman wore. Rather than being associated with the famous Hollywood actor due to its appearance on his wrist in a noteworthy film; this was the watch that was given to Paul Newman by his wife and the one that he actually chose to wear during much of his personal life. When Paul Newman’s very own Paul Newman Daytona sold at an auction in 2017, it fetched a total of $17.75 million, making it the most expensive Rolex watch ever sold.
Both this Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6239 and Paul Newman’s own example of the same reference are fitted with Paul Newman dials; however the one fitted to Newman’s watch was white with black sub-dials (known as a “Panda Dial”), while this one is black with white sub-dials (often called a “Reverse Panda Dial”). Similarly, both examples are of the variety known as tri-color dials, due to their use of small bright red accents to highlight their otherwise black and white color profiles.
Like other reference 6239 watches, this example is fitted with an engraved stainless steel tachymeter bezel, an acrylic crystal, and pump-style chronograph pushers. The Paul Newman Daytona was the watch that first kicked off the public’s interest in vintage Rolex watches and the ref. 6239 represents the very start of the Rolex Daytona collection as we know it today. Accompanied by a circa-appropriate, folded-link Oyster bracelet, this rare and highly desirable Rolex Daytona is a true must-have for any serious vintage Rolex collector.
MOVEMENT: Movement is functioning. This vintage Rolex Daytona comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
