Although Agent 007 wore a Rolex Submariner during the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger, another noteworthy Rolex watch appeared during that same movie and just like the Submariner, that model is now incredibly collectible today. Known as the “Pussy Galore” due to being famously worn by the fictional character of the same name (portrayed by Honor Blackman), the Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542 is easily the most rare and sought after GMT watch of all time.
In addition to being one of the earliest instances of a woman prominently wearing a man’s watch in a major feature film, the Rolex GMT-Master 6542 occupies an incredibly special place within both the brand’s history and the entire category of pilot’s watches. The reference 6542 was the very first GMT-Master watch that Rolex ever created, and the model includes a number of unique traits that do not appear on any other Rolex GMT watches, vintage or modern.
Only produced between 1955 and 1959, the GMT-Master ref. 6542 represents Rolex’s original vision for its legendary pilot’s watch, and it is the only Rolex GMT model ever produced with a 38mm case diameter, as all subsequent editions have had 40mm cases. Along with being the only stainless steel Rolex GMT watch to not have a case with crown-guards, the ref. 6542 is also the very first Rolex watch to ever feature the collection’s now signature red and blue “Pepsi” bezel insert.
Given their early place within Rolex’s sports watch history, all GMT-Master ref. 6542 watches feature glossy gilt dials; however it is the bezel of the reference 6542 that is the model’s most defining characteristic. When the GMT-Master collection first debuted, it featured a bi-color red and blue bezel insert crafted from Bakelite with glowing radium numerals set into it. By 1959, Rolex had completely replaced the Bakelite inserts with non-glowing inserts made from aluminum, and the brand even went so far as to recall the Bakelite GMT inserts altogether later that year, due to concerns surrounding both the radiation levels of the embedded glowing numerals and the overall durability of the Bakelite material itself.
Due to the incredibly short production period of the reference 6542, it is easily the rarest Rolex GMT-Master reference of all time. However, the number of ref. 6542 watches that still have their original Bakelite bezel inserts is even smaller due to both the recall and the relatively brittle nature of the material itself. This particular example dates back to 1958 and it features a remarkably well-preserved original red and blue Bakelite insert. Complete with a circa-appropriate, expanding rivet-link Oyster bracelet, this ref. 6542 is a true grail watch for collectors and an exceptional example of Rolex’s vintage GMT-Master collection.
MOVEMENT: Movement is functioning. This vintage Rolex GMT-Master comes with Bob's Watches one year warranty.
