Omega debuted the Speedmaster Professional Mark II reference 145.014 in 1969. It remained in production for just a few years before it was discontinued in 1972 in favor of the Mark III model. Omega kept the look of the classic Speedmaster dial but added "Mark II" text and housed it in a not-so-conventional tonneau-shaped case. Interestingly, Omega still used the caliber 861 that powered the classic Speedmaster Professional at the time. It was only the second Speedmaster movement, replacing the celebrated caliber 321 in 1968. Omega released several versions of the Mark II, including stainless steel, gold-capped, and solid gold models, and a stainless version with a matte grey "Racing Dial," like the example we have here. The Racing dial version is arguably the most sought-after and most striking design. Collectors seek these out because of the lovely matte grey dial and bright accent colors. The checkered design around the edge gives the watch its famous racing aesthetic. This example is coming from the family of the original owner.
