California dials are characterized by a mix of Roman numerals on the top and Arabic numerals on the bottom, with an inverted triangle marker at 12 o’clock and stick or dash markers at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock. Panerai first started using these dials in the 1930s. The design was created by Rolex (who made early Panerai watches) and later became known as the error-proof dial for its incredibly intuitive design. The term "California dial" came later, coined by vintage collectors in the 1980s after a Los Angeles-based dial refinisher popularized the style.
