Pre-owned Panerai Radiomir ref PAM00424 (2013) doesn’t look like anything else in the room. The 47mm polished steel case, wire lugs, and cushion shape go straight back to Panerai’s earliest military-issued designs, but the real conversation starter is the dial. This is a California dial, which means the hour markers are split between Roman numerals on the top half and Arabic numerals on the bottom. The layout dates back to early Panerai references produced by Rolex in the 1930s, most notably the ref. 3646. The “California” nickname reportedly came later from a Los Angeles dial restorer in the 1970s. Regardless of the origin story, it’s become one of the most collectible dial styles in Panerai’s catalog. This example is the later, date-free configuration, which keeps the dial completely symmetrical. Despite its 47mm size, the wire lugs and lack of a crown guard make it surprisingly comfortable to wear. It’s bold, historic, and unapologetically different. Very much the spirit of early Radiomir.
