This Nautilus ref. 3800 is in overall great vintage condition. The case is in good condition with some light scratches and light wear. The bezel is in great condition with some light wear. When looking at the case apart, one of the “ears” has the corresponding last three digits of the case number which is correct. This has retained its black date wheel with white numerals. The Sigma dial is in great condition with light patina; it has that green-ish look which is something we have seen before. The hour markers have developed patina and have aged to a lovely yellow color. The hands appear to be later service replacements. This watch has the iconic integrated bracelet with 21 links and the fold-over clasp is marked “Nautilus” as well as signed “Patek-Philippe Geneve." The bracelet is in overall great condition with light wear and light stretch between the links. The Calatrava Cross emblem on the flip-lock of the bracelet is in great condition and the details are prominent.
The watch was sent to Patek where it was serviced and polished. This watch has a corresponding service tag from Patek with corresponding movement and case numbers.
Patek Philippe introduced the now legendary Nautilus ref. 3700 in 1976 making this year the 50th anniversary. Patek made many variations of that model and in 1981 they came out with the mid-size Nautilus, the ref. 3800 and it was available to clients the following year. Patek discontinued the 3800 after a couple decades and according to scholarship, the steel version was seen in Patek catalogs as late as 2006. Besides the size, aesthetically the biggest difference between the models is that the 3800 has a center sweep second hand. In the last few years, the 3800 has become very sought after. Patek made many variations of the 3800 in different metals with many dial variations and here we have the classic and probably most iconic version in stainless steel with blue dial. Patek had some variations to the steel 3800 and this example has the accent on the “E” in Geneve as well as the sigma symbols flanking “Swiss” at the bottom of the dial. The dial on this watch has a greenish hue to it which we have seen before. This example is from the late 1980s and has the correct black date wheel with white numbers and the very useful quick-set date function.
