Pre-owned Rolex OysterQuartz Day-Date ref 19018 (1981) hails from one of the more unusual chapters in the brand’s history. Introduced in the late 1970s, it was Rolex’s answer to the quartz crisis, when battery-powered watches were taking over the industry. Instead of outsourcing, Rolex developed its own quartz movements, leading to the Oysterquartz. It kept the same core identity as the traditional models, but with a completely different engine inside. This example takes that concept and applies it to Rolex’s flagship. Solid yellow gold, champagne dial, and the iconic dual aperture dial, but the case is sharper and more angular than the standard Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. That’s one of the easiest ways to tell them apart. The bigger difference is inside. Instead of a mechanical automatic movement, this runs on a high-precision quartz caliber. It’s still a Day-Date at heart, just interpreted through a very different era of watchmaking. A bit less common, a bit more distinctive, and something collectors tend to appreciate for that reason.
