The inspiration behind the design of the Rolex Explorer lies in the historic first summit of Mount Everest, a feat that was accomplished by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. It is rumored that on the wrist of one of these brave men was a Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch. Even through the tough terrain and extreme weather of Mount Everest, the Oyster Perpetual remained in excellent working order. The Explorer mirrors the design of the watch that accompanied those legendary explorers and includes a few upgrades, such as a black dial topped with highly visible luminous baton hour markers and Mercedes hands and a secure three-link Oyster bracelet secured by a folding Oysterlock clasp.
