Rolex Explorer II Ref 16550
Transitional Rolex watches are very prized collector's items, both for their place in Rolex history and their unique character. Nearly every model in the Rolex portfolio has a transitional model, including the cult favorite Explorer II. The ref. 16550 is one such model that earns its title as a transitional watch because it was the first Explorer II to feature a larger 40mm case size, a cal. 3085 Perpetual movement, and a tougher scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. This reference was introduced in the mid-1980s and essentially bridged the gap between the Steve McQueen 1655 and the ref. 16570.
