Pre-owned Rolex Explorer ref 214270 (2018) was the first larger model in the series, which had previously kept a traditional 36mm case. With ref. 214270, the series grew to 39mm, thus appealing to a broader range of modern collectors. As it so often goes in Rolex watchmaking, with new designs comes room for improvement. The case grew, but the proportions on the dial stayed largely the same, and many felt the hands were too short for the newer 39mm Explorer. To better balance the dial, Rolex released this Mark II ref. 214270 in 2016, with slightly longer hands and fully-lume Arabic numerals. The result is a perfectly nuanced watch without forsaking the collection's more understated design codes. Rolex eventually shelved the 39mm model completely, replacing it with the current 36mm and 40mm lineup. However, there's still considerable demand for ref. 214270 for its place in Rolex history and its dial variants.
