This 5513 is in overall great, vintage condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The inside caseback is stamped "5513 IV.71" and the numbers between the lugs are visible. The bezel insert is in attractive condition with some wear and scratches throughout. The bezel has faded a bit and can present as more or less grey depending on the lighting. The dial is in overall great condition with light patina. The lume has developed patina and aged to an attractive "post it" yellow color throughout. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands have aged to a similar color as the lume on the dial. This watch features a C+I USA Rolex bracelet with 11 links and is stamped "74" indicating it is from 1974. The bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear stretch between the links which is common for common for this style bracelet.
Pre-Owned Rolex Submariner ref 5513 (Circa 1975) was one of the longest continually produced references from the brand. Rolex introduced ref. 5513 around 1962 and it was in production until 1989. Rolex initially used glossy dials in this model and swapped to matte dials around 1966. When Rolex went to the matte dial they also put the depth rating as "200m = 660ft" and these are known as "meters first" in the collecting community. Eventually Rolex would swap the depth rating to feet first around the early 1970s and have continued this trend to the modern offerings. The watch we have here has a "feet first" depth rating. One theory on this change is that Rolex wanted to boost sales in the United States, but to our knowledge Rolex has not made any definitive statements on this shift.
This example has aged beautifully from the "post it" yellow lume to the slightly faded bezel which gives the watch that quintessential vintage vibe collectors are looking for. This watch features a "serif" dial. When looking closely at the dial the 3, 6, and 9 hour markers show serifs on the corners.
