For this edition of Bob’s Spotlight, we shine the light one of the biggest and baddest Rolex watches around. Sit back and take in the incredible details of this Platinum President.
What is the Day-Date II?
When Rolex unveiled the Day-Date in 1956, it made waves as the first calendar wristwatch to indicate the day written in full on the dial, along with the date. Positioned as the most exclusive of Rolex watches, the Day-Date quickly became the top choice among the world’s leaders, celebrities, and businessmen.
The Day-Date is already a luxurious collection, but here is the platinum iteration.
53 years after the inaugural Day-Date, Rolex enhanced its luxurious dress watch collection with the Day-Date II. Making its debut at Baselworld 2008, the Day-Date II offered up a bigger and bolder way to wear the famous Rolex President watch.
There are many celebrities who opt for the Platinum Day-Date II 218206.
Compared to the 36mm case size of the traditional Day-Date, the 41mm size of the Day-Date II was a big increase indeed. Needless to say, the larger size was very well appreciated. This was especially true among larger wrists and fans of bigger timepieces. Subsequently, the Day-Date II swiftly became the go-to dress Rolex for those looking for something special. We’ve noticed that the President II is especially favored by celebrity athletes. LeBron James, Draymond Green, Devonta Freeman, and Carmelo Anthony all have one (or several!) in their collection.

What’s more, this specific Rolex ref. 218106 houses an ice blue dial. Since this hue is exclusive to Rolex platinum models, it’s a quick way to indicate the preciousness of the watch! Rather than just a straightforward color, the ice blue dial on the ref. 218106 is further embellished with concentric circles on the periphery. Plus, there are the Roman numerals and center hands in a darker shade of blue that give a great overall effect to the face of the watch.
The Platinum Day-Date II 218206 comes at a whopping 41mm.
Although Rolex eventually discontinued the Day-Date II to make way for the newer Day-Date 40 in 2015, the largest Rolex President is still a very popular model in the secondary market. In fact, because of its broader shape and thicker lugs, it’s not just the biggest, but the sportiest looking one too. So, if you’re on the hunt for a Rolex that makes a big statement then reach for the Rolex platinum President ref. 218206.
