Vintage Rolex Date ref 1501 circa 1960 is in overall great, vintage condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The inside caseback is stamped, " 1501 IV.60." Between the lugs show some wear and the numbers are clearly visible. The date wheel has developed some patina. The bezel is in good condition with the texture still intact. The movement has retained its older style "butterfly" rotor. The dial has developed patina throughout giving it almost a sandy look, some would call it tropical. When looking close the dial shows some wear and marks and presents as almost a sandy brown with black undertones throughout. The hands and hour markers have developed patina. The lume on the dial has developed patina and some plots show signs of degradation. The lume in the hands has developed patina and darkened. This watch has a later 1970s folded Oyster 7835 bracelet with no. 357 end links and 12 links. The bracelet is in great condition with normal signs of wear and light stretch between the links.
Rolex produced many variations of the Date model over the years, and this example—dating to around 1960—is one of the earlier ones we have come across. It features a 34mm case, engine-turned bezel, and date function. The Dauphine hands are a nice early detail, adding a bit of vintage charm.
What truly sets this watch apart, though, is the dial. Originally black, it has aged into a rich, sandy brown-black tone that gives the piece real depth and character. It’s the kind of natural patina collectors love—warm, unique, and full of personality.
