Vintage Rolex Daytona Ref 16523 Circa 1988 is in overall great, attractive vintage condition. The case is in good condition with normal signs of wear. The numbers are clearly visible between the lugs and the inside caseback is stamped "16500." The bezel is is in good, attractive condition with normal signs of wear and some paint missing from numbers. The "Floating Cosmograph" dial is in overall excellent condition with light patina. The lume on the dial has aged to a white creamy color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands matches the color of the lume on the dial. This watch has a 78363 bracelet with no. 403 end links and 12 links. The bracelet is in overall great condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links. The clasp is stamped "M6" indicating it's from 1988.
Vintage Rolex Daytona Ref 16523 Circa 1988 is an example of the first generation automatic "Zenith" Daytona in two-tone. At this time Rolex didn't have an in-house automatic chronograph movement so they used the Zenith El Primero and modified it for the new reference; hence the nickname "Zenith Daytona." Rolex introduced the reference 16520 in 1988, and this "R" series example is one of the earliest. Early examples like this feature the sought-after "Floating Cosmograph" dial, named for the noticeable gap above the word "Cosmograph"—a detail found only on watches with R and L serial numbers. The dial is also what collectors refer to as a "Porcelain" dial, thanks to the glossy lacquer finish that resembles porcelain or enamel (hard with a shiny finish). The text is baked onto the lacquer, giving it a subtle depth when viewed closely. Another early trait is the "inverted 6" in the 6 o’clock sub-dial, where the numeral appears as a "9." You’ll also find "Units per hour" placed at 3 o’clock on the bezel and a non–flip-lock clasp. It’s these small, easy-to-miss details that make early Daytona's so special.
