About the Rolex 1908
The Rolex 1908 is the brand's modern dress watch, introduced at Watches and Wonders 2023. It replaced the discontinued Cellini collection and quickly earned attention for its refined design and technically impressive in-house movement. The name refers to 1908, the year Hans Wilsdorf officially registered the Rolex trademark, making it a tribute to the brand's origins as much as a statement of where it stands today.
Unlike most Rolex models, the 1908 sits firmly in dress watch territory. It is not built for the water or the outdoors. Instead, it is designed for those who appreciate quiet, restrained elegance rooted in watchmaking tradition.
Case, Dial, and Materials
The 1908 comes in a 39mm case and is available in three precious metals: 18k yellow gold, 18k white gold, and platinum. The dial options include intense white, intense black, and an ice blue that is reserved exclusively for the platinum version, a finishing touch shared only with the Day-Date and Daytona in Rolex's current lineup. Each dial features a guilloché grain de riz texture that gives it depth and visual interest without being loud about it.
The hour and minute hands are finely finished: a sword-shaped minute hand and a Breguet-style hour hand, both faceted and polished. Arabic numerals appear at 3, 9, and 12, with a small seconds hand positioned at 6 o'clock. The overall look draws directly from the spirit of the original Oyster Perpetual watches of 1931.
Straps and Bracelets
Most 1908 variants come on an alligator leather strap in either black or brown, with tone-on-tone stitching and a green calfskin inner lining, a subtle nod to Rolex's signature color. The strap is paired with a Dualclasp in matching metal, which is designed to sit centered on the wrist for a comfortable, secure fit.
The yellow gold version is also available with the Settimo bracelet, a seven-link design crafted entirely in 18k yellow gold. It is the only bracelet option for the 1908 and gives the watch a more formal, jewelry-inspired look. The Settimo is fitted with a concealed Crownclasp.
Movement
The 1908 is powered by Caliber 7140, a self-winding movement developed and manufactured entirely in-house by Rolex. Rolex filed five patent applications for this movement, which includes a silicon Syloxi hairspring and a Chronergy escapement in a nickel-phosphorus alloy, both resistant to magnetic fields. It carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which means it is tested to an accuracy of +/- 2 seconds per day after leaving the factory.
One of the most notable details on the 1908 is its transparent caseback, made from virtually scratchproof sapphire crystal. This is a rare feature for Rolex and allows the wearer to see the decorated movement inside, including the openwork oscillating weight in yellow gold engraved with the words "Chronometer Perpetual."
What Affects the Value of Your Rolex 1908
Several factors will determine the final offer you receive for your 1908. Here is what our team looks at when evaluating a watch:
- Reference number: The specific model reference tells us the metal, dial color, and strap or bracelet configuration.
- Metal: Platinum and yellow gold Settimo models generally carry higher secondary market premiums than white or yellow gold leather strap variants.
- Condition: Scratches, scuffs, or damage to the case, dial, or strap will affect the offer. A well-maintained watch in near-mint condition will receive the strongest price.
- Box and papers: Having the original Rolex box and warranty papers adds value. It is not required to sell, but it does make a difference.
- Service history: Documentation of any service work is helpful but not necessary.
