A Rolex Oyster was famously present during Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary's historic climb to the peak of Mount Everest in the early 1950s. Rolex capitalized on its presence during this incredible feat with the release of the Explorer line. For decades, the iconic adventurer's tool watch has been the grail watch of many and has seen numerous upgrades. The ref. 14270 that is presented here today was produced in 1996 and utilizes an older-style Oyster case with a 36mm diameter and sleeker lugs - newer Explorer models now offer a 39mm case. The line's iconic dial displays the time via luminous baton markers, a luminous triangle marker at 12 o'clock, luminous Arabic markers at the 3, 6, and 9-hour positions, and central Mercedes hands. The case is also notoriously tough, offering resistance to pressures of up to 100 meters as well as extreme weather variations and dust particles to provide as accurate of a reading as possible.
