Pre-owned Rolex Explorer 36 ref 124273 (2022) came to market in 2021, making it the first two-tone model in the series. For a collection historically defined by its understated, all-steel tool watch identity, this model caught many collectors by surprise. The Explorer’s roots trace back to Rolex’s association with mountaineering and exploration during the 1950s, particularly the successful Everest expedition of 1953. Over the decades, the watch became known for its clean black dial, highly legible 3-6-9 layout, and no-nonsense functionality. It was always one of the simplest and most purpose-driven watches in the Rolex catalog. That’s exactly why the release of the two-tone ref. 124273 generated so much conversation. Rolex took one of its purest tool watches and gave it a slightly more elevated and contemporary personality without fundamentally changing the design.

This reference also helped mark the return of the Explorer to its classic 36mm case size after years of 39mm production. The smaller proportions feel truer to vintage Explorer models and wear exceptionally well on the wrist. Yellow gold center links, gold numerals, and matching handset details add warmth to the otherwise sporty aesthetic while still keeping the watch restrained enough for everyday wear. Inside is the Rolex caliber 3230, a modern automatic movement with improved efficiency, anti-magnetic components, and a strong power reserve. The result is an Explorer that still feels rugged and versatile, just with a little more personality than before.
