Pre-owned Rolex Explorer ref 14270 (2000) replaced the long-running ref. 1019 in 1989, a model that spanned three decades from the late 1950s to the late 1980s. With ref. 14270, the modern Explorer as we know it today, finally started to take shape. The matte dial from later-production 1019s was swapped for a glossy surface, and the iconic 3/6/9 markers are now represented by modern applied hour markers rather than painted numerals. Also, Rolex upgraded the series to a sapphire crystal with this model and gave it a newer, high-beat movement: caliber 3000. The "SWISS MADE" text signifies the upgrade later on to Super-LumiNova, replacing the previous LumiNova material used in prior examples. Ultimately, Rolex discontinued this model in favor of ref. 114270, but it remains a collector favorite for its transitional status and classic 36mm proportions.
